Semitendinosus
Abstract
Complete separation of semitendinosus from biceps femoris has been noted and this is of interest because the two muscles are independent in certain groups of mammals. Semitendinosus may be partially fused with semimembranosus and cases have been reported of muscular slips joining biceps femoris and semitendinosus. Accessory slips have been observed arising from the coccyx, sacrotuberous ligament, or ischial tuberosity and joining the belly of semitendinosus. In 39% of 62 limbs, the semitendinosus took origin from the sacrotuberous ligament.

A rare variation is one in which a slip arises from the linea aspera below the semitendinosus and ends on the media epicondyle and back of the knee joint.
Tensor fasciae suralis or ischioaponeuroticus is a slip that leaves the belly of the semitendinosus (it may also be one of the other hamstrings) and ends in a tendon that joins the fascia of the leg.
